Health

# The Briard's health

France

Rustic and generally robust, the Berger de Brie tolerates cold and bad weather well. However, it does have predispositions to certain conditions, notably gastric dilatation-volvulus, hip dysplasia and hemeralopia. Careful breeding attentive to screening, controlled growth, an appropriate diet and regular veterinary follow-up help to preserve its health.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

Its lifespan is generally between 10 and 12 years. Good body condition, daily activity adapted to its age, and regular preventive monitoring promote a long and active life.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

The Berger de Brie is a hardy and resilient dog, capable of working in cold or wet weather thanks to its protective coat. Its sturdiness does not exempt one from monitoring the joints, digestion and vision, three known points of vigilance in the breed.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Particular attention must be paid to digestion, hips and vision. Any sudden swelling of the abdomen, unproductive retching, unusual agitation or weakness constitutes a veterinary emergency.

- Gastric dilatation-volvulus: This serious emergency affects large dogs more and requires immediate veterinary care in case of a bloated abdomen, restlessness, or unproductive attempts to vomit.
- Hip dysplasia: This joint abnormality can cause pain and osteoarthritis; screening breeding dogs and managing weight are important.
- Nyctalopia: This decrease in visual ability in low light is among the eye conditions reported in the breed and warrants ophthalmologic follow-up.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

Its long coat and undercoat offer it good protection against cold and bad weather. It tolerates heat moderately: in hot periods, outings must be shifted to cooler hours, with shade, water and no sustained effort in the sun.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

Its weight must remain stable in order to limit the load on the joints. The ration should be adjusted to age, activity level and body condition, taking treats into account. Regular weighing and observing the silhouette make it possible to quickly correct any excess.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Have the hips and eyes checked according to veterinary recommendations.
- Seek emergency consultation in case of signs suggestive of gastric dilatation-volvulus.
- Maintain a stable weight to protect the joints.
- Adjust exertion during growth and in high heat.
- Regularly examine the eyes, ears, paw pads, and the skin under the coat.

Vaccination

## Briard vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Briard need? Like all dogs, Briards should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Briard vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Briard booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Briard

Before breeding, it is recommended to check the screening results for hip dysplasia and hereditary eye conditions present in the breed. On a daily basis, veterinary follow-up includes a locomotor examination, checking the eyes, weight, mouth and general condition.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
