Feeding

# Feeding your Briard well

France

The diet of the Berger de Brie must support its large size, its activity and its muscle mass without promoting overly rapid growth or weight gain. A complete, digestible ration adapted to its life stage is essential.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: Choose a formula for large-breed puppies, split meals and control growth in order to protect the joints.
- Adult: Adjust the ration to the activity level and maintain an athletic silhouette without excess weight.
- Senior: Reassess energy intake, preserve quality proteins and monitor weight and mobility more closely.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

A complete diet for a large-sized dog, in the form of quality kibble or a home-prepared ration formulated with a veterinary nutritionist, is suitable for the breed. In the puppy, a formula specific to the growth of large dogs helps to control energy and mineral intake.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

The daily amount depends on the energy density of the food, weight, age, sterilization and activity. The manufacturer's indications are a starting point to be adjusted according to body condition with the veterinarian's advice.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 30 - 35 kg | 320 - 420 g | 2 |
| 35 - 40 kg | 380 - 480 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any change in diet must be gradual over about one week, increasing each day the proportion of the new food. This transition limits digestive upsets and makes it possible to observe the dog's tolerance.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Fresh, clean water must remain available at all times, with several water points if the dog lives in a large house or spends time in the garden. Needs increase in hot weather and after activity.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats should remain occasional, small in size and be deducted from the daily ration. They can be used for training, favoring rewards that are low in calories and easy to digest.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Divide the daily ration into two meals.
- Avoid intense exercise just before and after meals.
- Adjust the quantities according to body condition and the energy density of the food.
- Deduct treats from the daily ration.
- Use a slow-feeder bowl if the dog eats too quickly.

### Never feed these foods

Chocolate, fresh or dried grapes, onion, garlic in toxic quantities, xylitol, alcohol, caffeine, macadamia nuts and cooked bones are to be avoided, as they can cause poisoning, digestive disorders, internal lesions or neurological and kidney damage.
