Health

# The Boxer's health

Germany

The Boxer has several predispositions that justify careful veterinary monitoring. Its short muzzle can promote breathing difficulties, especially in hot weather. The breed may also be affected by cardiac, joint, neurological, endocrine, ocular and digestive disorders.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

Its usual lifespan is between 10 and 12 years. A suitable diet, maintaining a healthy weight, regular activity without excess in hot weather, and veterinary follow-up help preserve its quality of life.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

Despite a powerful bone structure and an athletic appearance, the Boxer shows moderate health robustness due to its respiratory, cardiac, tumoral and joint predispositions. Rigorous selection and appropriate screenings are important.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Regular monitoring is recommended in order to detect early respiratory, cardiac, locomotor, digestive, neurological, endocrine, skin, auditory or ocular signs.

- Dilated cardiomyopathy and aortic stenosis: These heart conditions can impair circulation and require screening as well as veterinary monitoring.
- Hip and elbow dysplasia: These joint abnormalities can cause pain, lameness, and osteoarthritis.
- Brachycephalic syndrome: The short muzzle can lead to breathing difficulties, particularly during exertion or in hot weather.
- Gastric torsion: This digestive emergency requires immediate consultation in case of a swollen belly, agitation, or unproductive attempts to vomit.
- Degenerative myelopathy: This progressive neurological condition can lead to weakness and then paralysis of the hind limbs.
- Cancers: The breed has a predisposition to certain tumor diseases, and any unusual mass should be examined.
- Progressive retinal atrophy and eyelid abnormalities: Ophthalmologic monitoring helps detect retinal damage, entropion, or ectropion.
- Deafness: Hearing impairment may occur and warrant a specialized evaluation if in doubt.
- Hypothyroidism: This hormonal disorder can affect weight, skin, coat, and energy level.
- Allergies and demodicosis: These skin conditions can cause itching, redness, or hair loss.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Boxer tolerates heat poorly due to its short muzzle and must be protected from the sun and from exertion when temperatures are high. It is also sensitive to cold because of its short coat. Extreme weather conditions should be avoided.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

Its ration must be adjusted to its age, its weight and its activity level. The tendency to gain weight is moderate. It is advisable to regularly monitor its physique and to avoid intense exercise just before and after meals in order to limit the risk of gastric torsion.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Have the heart checked regularly by the veterinarian.
- Ask for hip, elbow and thyroid screenings.
- Avoid exertion and sun during periods of extreme heat.
- Keep the dog calm before and after meals.
- Check the eyes and ears every week.
- Brush the teeth and trim the nails when necessary.
- Brush the coat at least twice a week.

Vaccination

## Boxer vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Boxer need? Like all dogs, Boxers should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Boxer vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Boxer booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Boxer

Recommended screenings concern the heart, hips, elbows and thyroid. Veterinary follow-up must also take into account predispositions to degenerative myelopathy, cancers, brachycephalic syndrome, eye disorders and deafness.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder
