Origins

## Where does it come from?

Formerly called a « cattle dog » in its region of origin, the Bouvier des Ardennes was bred to drive and guard herds of cattle. It also worked with sheep, pigs and horses. Its endurance and its ability to move over rough terrain also led to it being employed from the 19th century onwards for tracking deer and wild boar. The Liège Society for the improvement of the cattle dog of the province of Liège and the Ardennes, founded in 1913, drew up a first standard completed ten years later. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale definitively recognized the breed on 13 June 1955, then published its standard on 16 June 1963.

Appearance

## What does it look like?

The Ardennes Cattle Dog is a rustic, short, stocky and compact dog, with heavy bone structure. Its powerful and rather short head has a broad and flat skull, a pronounced stop without excess, a large black nose, a thick muzzle and strong jaws. Its small triangular ears are set high, ideally erect, and its slightly oval eyes are as dark as possible. Its strongly built body has a muscular back, a deep chest and a broad, slightly sloping croup. Its tail is naturally short, thick and set high. The coat, harsh, dry and tousled, measures about six centimeters on the body and forms a moustache and a small beard. All colors are accepted except white.

Temperament

## Temperament and personality

Energetic, hardy and tenacious, the Bouvier des Ardennes shows the determination and courage expected of a herding and livestock-guarding dog. Protective towards its family, it also stands out for its curiosity, sociability and joie de vivre. Its adaptability makes it an excellent working and guard dog, provided that its activity needs and its assertive temperament are respected.

Affectionate Playful Protective

Living together

## Living with children and other pets

The Bouvier des Ardennes needs an active daily routine. Made for work, it must benefit from long outings and regular play sessions with its owner in order to preserve its physical and psychological balance. It appreciates space and freedom of movement and is not naturally suited to a sedentary life in an apartment. In the city, its owner must be available and offer it enough exercise every day.

Training

## Training and socialization

His training must begin early and remain firm, consistent and measured. Handling that combines authority and gentleness allows him to clearly learn the rules of life and the limits not to be crossed, without seeking a power struggle. His tenacious temperament requires a steady owner, capable of channeling his energy and highlighting his working abilities.
