Feeding

# Feeding your Boston Terrier well

United States

A complete, balanced and digestible diet helps maintain muscle mass and a healthy weight. Portions must match actual energy expenditure, because this small dog can gain weight if intake exceeds its activity.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: Provide a small-breed diet in three meals, then gradually reduce to two meals at the end of growth.
- Adult: Serve two measured meals and adjust the portion to activity in order to maintain a stable weight.
- Senior: Favor a digestible formula, monitor muscle mass and adapt energy intake with the veterinarian.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

High-quality kibble for small dogs is a practical solution if its energy content is adapted. A home-prepared ration based on meat, starches and vegetables may also be suitable, but it must be formulated with a veterinarian in order to avoid deficiencies.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

The daily amount depends on the caloric density of the food, the ideal weight, age, sterilization and activity. The manufacturer's guidelines serve as a starting point and must be adjusted according to changes in body condition.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 7 - 8 kg | 120 - 150 g | 2 |
| 9 - 10 kg | 145 - 180 g | 2 |
| 11 kg | 165 - 195 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any dietary change must be gradual over about a week, gradually increasing the proportion of the new food in order to limit digestive upsets.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Fresh, clean water must remain available at all times, particularly in hot weather and after a walk or a play session.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats should remain occasional and be deducted from the daily ration. Small, low-calorie pieces are better suited to training than an abundant distribution.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh the ration rather than estimating it by eye.
- Split the daily food into two meals.
- Limit treats and subtract them from the ration.
- Avoid intense activity right after the meal.
- Check weight and body shape every month.

### Never feed these foods

Chocolate, grapes and raisins, onion, garlic, leek, avocado, macadamia nuts, alcohol, caffeine, products containing xylitol and cooked bones should be avoided, as they can cause poisoning, digestive disorders, neurological damage or internal injuries.
