Feeding

# Feeding your Border Terrier well

United Kingdom

The Border Terrier is generally not difficult to feed. A complete, healthy and balanced diet, adapted to its small size and its activity level, helps maintain its vitality and its optimal weight.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: Choose a growth food for small dogs and divide the ration into three meals until about six months.
- Adult: Serve a measured ration in two meals, adapted to the actual activity and body condition.
- Senior: Favor an easily digestible formula and adjust the energy intake if activity decreases.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

Premium kibble rich in animal proteins and formulated for small-sized adult dogs is well suited. A home-prepared ration can also be offered if it is calculated with a veterinarian in order to avoid deficiencies.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

The quantity depends on the energy density of the food, weight, age, neutering and activity. You should start from the manufacturer's recommendations, weigh the ration and adjust it according to changes in body condition.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 5 kg | 90 - 110 g | 2 |
| 6 kg | 105 - 125 g | 2 |
| 7 kg | 115 - 140 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any change in diet must be gradual over about a week, increasing each day the proportion of the new food in order to limit digestive upsets.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Fresh, clean water must remain available at all times, particularly after outings, sports sessions and during hot periods.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats should remain occasional and be deducted from the daily ration. Small, low-calorie pieces are preferable for training.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh the daily ration with a scale.
- Deduct treats from the daily intake.
- Avoid intense exercise immediately after the meal.
- Regularly monitor body shape and weight.

### Never feed these foods

Chocolate, grapes and raisins, onion, garlic, leek, avocado, alcohol, caffeine, xylitol, macadamia nuts and cooked bones should be avoided, as they can cause poisoning, digestive disorders or serious injuries.
