Health

# The Border Collie's health

United Kingdom

The Border Collie is generally a robust breed when it comes from serious selection, but it warrants careful monitoring of vision, the musculoskeletal system and certain neurological or genetic risks. Among the conditions regularly cited in the breed are in particular hip dysplasia, Collie eye anomaly, progressive retinal atrophy, epilepsy, certain drug sensitivities and, more occasionally, gastric torsion.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

Its longevity is generally good for a medium-sized dog, especially when its weight is kept under control, its activity is regular and its original breeding has been subject to appropriate screenings. A stable lifestyle and well-balanced training help preserve its condition over time.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

The Border Collie combines endurance, liveliness and good recovery capacity, but its natural intensity can push it to exert itself without restraint. It is therefore necessary to monitor fatigue, muscle recovery and overly repetitive efforts, especially in the young growing dog or the heavily worked sporting dog.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

A rigorous selection, regular veterinary checks and careful observation of behavior are important in this breed. Any decrease in vision, persistent lameness, change in balance, neurological seizure, unusual sensitivity to a treatment or sign of marked stress must prompt a quick consultation. It is also necessary to take into account its possible sensitivity to temperature variations and to avoid intense efforts just after meals.

- Hip dysplasia: joint abnormality that can cause pain, lameness and premature wear, especially in poorly selected dogs or those overexerted during growth
- Collie eye anomaly: hereditary condition that can affect different structures of the eye with a variable impact on vision
- Progressive retinal atrophy: degenerative disease of the retina that may lead to a gradual decline in vision
- Epilepsy: neurological seizures may occur in some dogs and require precise veterinary monitoring
- Sensitivity to certain medications: some lines may react abnormally to certain molecules, hence the importance of informing the veterinarian before treatment
- Gastric torsion: rare but serious digestive emergency that warrants splitting meals and avoiding intense exertion right after eating
- Osteochondritis dissecans: osteoarticular condition sometimes encountered in the breed, which can cause pain and locomotor discomfort

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

Thanks to its undercoat, the Border Collie tolerates cool and humid climates rather well. It can also live in hot weather, but exertion must then be adjusted, with outings during the mildest hours, shaded areas and constant hydration.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

Very active, the Border Collie often expends a lot, but its needs vary greatly depending on its actual lifestyle. A companion dog that is not exercised enough can gain weight if it receives a ration intended for a very athletic subject. Monitoring the body shape and adjusting portions are therefore essential.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Schedule at least an annual veterinary check-up
- Monitor any lameness or decrease in performance during exertion
- Have the eyes checked if there is any doubt about vision
- Inform the veterinarian of any known family history
- Avoid intense physical exertion right after meals

Vaccination

## Border Collie vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Border Collie need? Like all dogs, Border Collies should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Border Collie vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Border Collie booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Border Collie

It is advisable to give preference to breeding dogs tested for the main known risks of the breed, notably regarding the hips and the eyes. Depending on the lines, the veterinarian may also recommend additional examinations or draw attention to a possible sensitivity to certain medications, in addition to the usual locomotor and ophthalmological monitoring.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder
