Feeding

# Feeding your Belgian Laekenois well

Belgium

The Belgian Shepherd Laekenois needs a complete, digestible diet adapted to its energy expenditure. Protein quality, an adjusted energy intake and a good mineral balance are particularly important during growth and then throughout its active life.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: Choose a large-breed puppy food, divided into three meals then two, in order to support steady growth without excess energy.
- Adult: Adjust a ration rich in quality proteins to the actual activity and divide it into two meals, with a lighter portion in the morning.
- Senior: Reduce energy density if activity decreases while maintaining digestible proteins and careful monitoring of weight and joints.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

Complete high-quality kibble for an active large-breed dog is generally suitable, with clearly identified animal proteins and an appropriate energy density. A home-prepared ration can also be offered if it is formulated by a veterinarian in order to avoid deficiencies and imbalances.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

The daily amount depends on actual weight, age, sterilization, season, activity and the energy density of the food. The table is a guideline to be adjusted according to the manufacturer's indications and changes in body condition.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 20 - 24 kg | 250 - 330 g | 2 |
| 25 - 30 kg | 300 - 400 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any change of food must be gradual over about one week, increasing each day the proportion of the new food. A slower transition may be useful in a sensitive dog. Persistent digestive disorders require seeking advice from the veterinarian.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Clean, fresh water must be available at all times, especially after work, during hot weather and with a dry diet. After sustained exertion, it is better to let the dog calm down again before allowing it to drink very large quantities all at once.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats are useful for training this dog that is receptive to work, but they must remain small and be deducted from the daily ration. Low-fat rewards or a portion of the daily kibble help maintain an athletic silhouette.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh the ration rather than estimating it by eye.
- Split the daily amount into two meals.
- Avoid intense exercise just before and after meals.
- Adjust the ration according to body condition every two to four weeks.
- Ask for veterinary advice for a home-prepared ration.

### Never feed these foods

Chocolate, grapes and raisins, onion, garlic in quantity, xylitol, alcohol, caffeine, macadamia nuts, cooked bones and very fatty or very salty foods are to be avoided. They can cause poisoning, digestive disorders, internal lesions or pancreatitis and require quick veterinary contact in case of ingestion.
