Health

# The Beauceron's health

France

The Beauceron is overall a very robust dog, the result of a long working selection. It often retains its vigor for a long time and tolerates climatic variations well. Like many large active dogs, it nevertheless requires particular vigilance regarding the musculoskeletal system, the eyes and the risk of gastric dilatation-volvulus.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

The life expectancy of the Beauceron is generally between 10 and 12 years. This longevity is respectable for a large working dog, especially when the animal remains lean, well muscled, properly fed and monitored regularly in terms of joints and ophthalmology.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

The Beauceron is a hardy and solid dog, renowned for its physical endurance and its steadiness during exertion. This robustness does not rule out serious prevention, notably in large-sized or very sporty lines, in order to limit the impact of joint conditions and major digestive disorders.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Simple but regular prevention helps preserve the Beauceron’s qualities for a long time. It is advisable to avoid intense exertion just before or just after meals, to monitor the joints during growth, and not to neglect eye and cardiac check-ups in breeding dogs as well as in adults followed for sporting activities.

- Hip dysplasia: Common joint condition in large dogs that can cause pain, lameness, and early wear if not screened.
- Elbow dysplasia: Abnormal development of the elbow likely to limit locomotor comfort and exercise capacity.
- Progressive retinal atrophy: Degenerative eye disease that gradually impairs vision and can lead to blindness.
- Cataract: Clouding of the lens that can reduce vision and may require management depending on progression.
- Gastric torsion: Life-threatening emergency in large deep-chested dogs, promoted by large meals followed by exertion or agitation.
- von Willebrand disease: Rarer clotting disorder, but one to be aware of in certain bloodlines.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Beauceron handles cold well and tolerates weather variations properly thanks to its rustic build and its dense short coat. However, it remains more comfortable in an active life with access to a suitable shelter than in prolonged exposure to high heat, especially during intense exertion.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

The Beauceron rather needs a quality ration adapted to its activity than a severe restriction, because it is an energetic dog. Maintaining a lean silhouette is important to preserve its joints and limit digestive risks. Regular weighing and an adjustment of portions according to actual expenditure are recommended.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Have the hips screened in breeding dogs and sport dogs.
- Plan ophthalmologic follow-up in the case of a at-risk line.
- Monitor signs of bloating after meals.
- Regularly check the dewclaws and claws after outings.

Vaccination

## Beauceron vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Beauceron need? Like all dogs, Beaucerons should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Beauceron vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Beauceron booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Beauceron

The most relevant examinations concern the hips, the eyes and the heart, particularly in dogs intended for breeding or sport. Orthopedic monitoring during growth, then regular check-ups in adulthood, help to detect early the most important conditions of the breed.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
