Feeding

# Feeding your Bearded Collie well

United Kingdom

The Bearded Collie is generally not difficult. Its diet must provide quality proteins and energy suited to its often high activity, while maintaining a stable weight and good skin and coat quality.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: Choose a growth food for a medium-sized dog, divided into several meals, and avoid excess energy in order to protect the joints.
- Adult: Adapt a complete ration to the actual activity, generally in two meals, then adjust according to body condition.
- Senior: Favor an easily digestible formula, control weight and have the intake reassessed if activity or health status changes.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

High-quality complete kibble for a medium-sized and active dog is suitable, provided it is adapted to its age. A home-prepared ration based on meat, starches and fresh vegetables is also possible if it is formulated and supplemented with the help of a veterinary nutritionist.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

The daily amount depends on the energy density of the food, weight, age, neutering and activity. The manufacturer's guidelines are a starting point to be adjusted according to changes in body condition.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 20 - 25 kg | 260 - 330 g | 2 |
| 25 - 30 kg | 320 - 390 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any change of food must be gradual over about one week, by increasing little by little the proportion of the new food. A slower transition may be necessary in a dog that is sensitive from a digestive point of view.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Fresh, clean water must remain available at all times, especially after exercise and in hot weather. The bowl must be refilled frequently and consumption monitored, as an unusual variation may indicate a health problem.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats can support training, but they must remain small and be deducted from the daily ration. Low-fat rewards or part of the day's kibble limit excess calories.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh the ration rather than estimating it by eye.
- Split the daily amount into two meals.
- Avoid intense exercise just before and after the meal.
- Check the weight and body condition every month.
- Ask the veterinarian for advice for any home-prepared ration.

### Never feed these foods

Chocolate, fresh or dried grapes, onion, garlic, leek, xylitol, alcohol, caffeine, macadamia nuts, cooked bones and very fatty or very salty foods should be avoided, as they can cause poisoning, digestive disorders, internal injuries or pancreatitis.
