Health

# The Basset Hound's health

Great Britain

The Basset Hound enjoys generally good health, but its long, low morphology requires particular vigilance. Weight control, back protection, long ear hygiene, eye cleaning and skin monitoring are essential throughout its life.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

Its usual lifespan is between 8 and 12 years. A measured diet, regular activity without traumatic exertion, preventive care and veterinary follow-up help preserve its mobility and quality of life.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

It is a fairly robust and hardy dog, but its elongated back, short limbs, drooping eyelids and hanging ears create specific fragilities. It is advisable in particular to limit repeated stairs, jumps and excess weight, which increase the strain on the spine and joints.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

A veterinary consultation is recommended in case of back pain, difficulty moving, limping, a red or watery eye, abnormal ear odor, persistent itching or weight gain. Early detection often improves management.

- Back disorders: The elongated spine is exposed to pain and disc damage, especially in cases of overweight, jumping, or repeated stairs.
- Eye disorders: Drooping eyelids promote deposits, irritation, and certain infections that require regular monitoring.
- External otitis: Long, drooping ears limit ventilation of the ear canal and promote moisture, yeasts, and inflammation.
- Malassezia dermatitis: The breed has a predisposition to this overgrowth of cutaneous yeasts, responsible for redness, odors, and itching.
- Gastric dilatation-volvulus: Its deep chest can increase the risk, which justifies split meals and rest around food intake.
- Basset Hound thrombopathy: This hereditary disorder of platelet function can cause abnormally prolonged bleeding.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Basset Hound tolerates cold and heat moderately. Its short coat offers little protection in cold weather, while its proximity to the ground and its size require moderating outings during high heat. A dry bed, walks during cool hours and permanent access to shade and water are essential.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

This breed is greedy and predisposed to being overweight. The ration must be weighed, adapted to age and activity, and treats included in the daily total. A stable silhouette protects the back and joints. Regular walks on non-slippery ground are preferable to sudden efforts and jumps.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Gently clean around the eyes every day if deposits appear.
- Inspect and maintain the ears at least once a week.
- Brush the coat weekly and more during shedding.
- Avoid repeated stairs, jumping, and slippery floors.
- Maintain a stable weight with measured portions and regular walks.
- Consult promptly in case of back pain or reduced mobility.

Vaccination

## Basset Hound vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Basset Hound need? Like all dogs, Basset Hounds should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Basset Hound vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Basset Hound booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Basset Hound

Before breeding, it is relevant to discuss with the veterinarian screening for eye disorders, orthopedic evaluation, and the risk of hereditary thrombopathy. In all individuals, monitoring must include weight, skin, ears, eyes, mobility, and dental condition.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
