Feeding

# Feeding your Austrian Pinscher well

Austria

The diet of the Austrian Short-haired Pinscher must be adapted to its age, its medium size and above all to its activity level. A good-quality ration helps support its muscle mass, its recovery and the balance of its skin and coat.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: A well-balanced growth diet, divided into several meals, helps support development without excess that could weigh on the joints.
- Adult: In adulthood, the ration must match the actual activity level to maintain good musculature without excess weight.
- Senior: In older dogs, a more digestible formula adapted to their activity helps preserve joint comfort and quality of life.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

A complete premium diet, often in the form of high-quality kibble, suits this breed well when it is chosen according to the dog's age, activity and body condition. Formulas that are too rich or poorly adapted should be avoided in less active individuals.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

The daily amount must be adjusted to the actual weight, the exercise rhythm, the age and the energy density of the chosen food. It is better to regularly reassess the ration than to always feed identically all year round.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 12 - 14 kg | 238 - 326 g | 2 |
| 14 - 16 kg | 270 - 370 g | 2 |
| 16 - 18 kg | 302 - 414 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any dietary change must be made gradually over several days in order to limit digestive upsets and to check good tolerance of the new formula. A gentle transition is particularly useful in an active dog whose digestive comfort also influences readiness for exertion.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times, with increased vigilance after long walks, play sessions and hot periods. Good hydration supports both recovery, thermoregulation and overall comfort.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats can be useful in training and to strengthen the relationship, provided they remain moderate and are integrated into the total ration. Favoring simple, digestible rewards helps avoid unnecessary excess calories.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh the ration rather than estimating it by eye.
- Divide the food into at least two meals per day.
- Adjust the intake after periods of reduced activity.

### Never feed these foods

As with other dogs, it is necessary to avoid in particular chocolate, grapes, raisins, onion, garlic, xylitol, alcohol, cooked bones and very fatty foods, as they can cause poisoning, severe digestive disorders or neurological and metabolic damage.
