Health

# The Appenzeller Sennenhund's health

Switzerland

With a solid constitution, the Appenzell Cattle Dog generally enjoys good resilience and does not present any particular genetic problem reported as a major characteristic of the breed. Serious selection, regular veterinary follow-up, suitable activity and a balanced diet nevertheless remain essential to preserve its health.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

It generally lives between 12 and 14 years. Good physical condition, stable weight, regular preventive care and a quality diet help to promote a long and active life.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

This herding dog is known to be robust, hardy and suited to working outdoors. Its compact build and musculature allow it to sustain regular activity, provided its growth is respected and overly intense repetitive efforts are avoided in the young dog.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Even if the breed is generally robust, the breeder and the veterinarian can pay preventive attention to the joints, the eyes and the general condition of the breeding dogs. Any lameness, decrease in activity, weight gain or change in behavior justifies veterinary advice.

- Hip or elbow dysplasia: As with many active medium-sized dogs, screening breeding dogs helps limit the risk of joint disorders.
- Eye conditions: A preventive ophthalmological examination of breeding dogs helps identify possible hereditary abnormalities.
- Activity-related injuries: Its energy and taste for exertion require an appropriate progression, especially during growth, in order to protect muscles and joints.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

Its double, dense coat gives it excellent resistance to cold and bad weather. It tolerates moderate heat fairly well, but exertion must be reduced during hot hours, with permanent access to shade and fresh water.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

Very active, the Appenzell Cattle Dog more easily maintains a healthy weight when it benefits from daily outings and a ration adjusted to its activity. Its physique should be monitored regularly, portions measured and treats limited so as not to overload its joints.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Schedule a veterinary check-up at least once a year.
- Keep vaccinations and antiparasitic treatments up to date.
- Monitor gait and consult in case of lameness.
- Regularly check the ears, eyes, teeth, and claws.
- Brush the coat every week and more often during shedding.

Vaccination

## Appenzeller Sennenhund vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Appenzeller Sennenhund need? Like all dogs, Appenzeller Sennenhunds should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Appenzeller Sennenhund vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Appenzeller Sennenhund booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Appenzeller Sennenhund

Before breeding, it is advisable to check the hips and elbows, to carry out an ophthalmological examination and to consult the updated recommendations of the breed club. Routine follow-up includes vaccinations, parasite prevention, dental check-ups and a regular veterinary examination.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.
