Origins

## Where does it come from?

The York Chocolat is a breed originating from the United States, which appeared in the early 1980s in the State of New York. Its development is linked to the selection carried out around a brown kitten named Brownie, born from matings between domestic cats. Its name refers to its traditional chocolate color and to its American cradle. The breed was then recognized in the early 1990s, then introduced later in Europe, while remaining today not very widespread.

Appearance

## What does it look like?

The York Chocolat is a semi-foreign type cat, both elegant and muscular. It has a medium, rounded head, large ears wide at the base, oval eyes ranging from gold to green, as well as a well-furnished tail. Its medium-long coat is fine, dense and silky, with very little undercoat. The accepted coat color is mainly chocolate or lilac, with or without white depending on the standard.

Temperament

## Temperament and personality

The York Chocolat is an expressive, affectionate and pleasant cat to live with. It combines real gentleness with moderate liveliness, which makes it a balanced companion. It appreciates the presence of its loved ones, likes to share moments of play, but also knows how to remain calm and composed when the environment is quiet.

Affectionate Intelligent Sociable

Living together

## Living with children and other pets

Active without being excessive, the York Chocolat likes to observe, explore and play, while regularly seeking the company of its owner. It generally tolerates the presence of children well and cohabits fairly well with other animals. It readily communicates, often through purring, and remains overall adaptable to an indoor life with regular periods of stimulation.

Training

## Training and socialization

The education of the York Chocolat is based mainly on routine, early socialization and positive interactions. This sensitive cat that is close to humans responds well to a stable framework, to the enrichment of its environment and to gentle handling from a very young age. It is advisable to encourage good behavior with reward rather than with constraint.

Budget

## Price and budget for the York Chocolate

The York Chocolate is a rare breed, which can influence its price depending on the lineage, the availability of kittens and the seriousness of the breeding. Beyond the purchase cost, you should plan for a regular maintenance budget including food, veterinary care and equipment.

Did you know?

## Fun facts and popularity

The York Chocolate owes its name both to the State of New York and to its emblematic color. Its modern history is often associated with Brownie, a brown kitten that caught the attention of an American breeder and served as the starting point for selective breeding. Despite its qualities as a companion, the breed remains little-known today.
