Feeding

# Feeding your Turkish Van well

Turkey

The Turkish Van has no specific dietary requirements, but its diet must be of good quality and suited to its age, activity level, health status and body condition. A well-balanced ration helps maintain its musculature and vitality.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Kitten: Complete growth food, divided into several small meals.
- Adult: Controlled ration, adapted to sterilization and indoor living.
- Senior: Highly digestible food, while monitoring kidneys, teeth and appetite.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

Premium kibble, quality wet food or a combination of both may be suitable, provided that the cat’s nutritional needs are properly met. The choice must remain consistent with its lifestyle, its digestion and the veterinarian’s recommendations.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

The ration is adjusted to the ideal weight, age and activity. A neutered indoor cat can quickly end up receiving too much energy if the quantities are not weighed.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 4 - 6 kg | 68 - 97 g | 2 |
| 6 - 7 kg | 88 - 124 g | 2 |
| 7 - 9 kg | 108 - 150 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any change in diet must be gradual over several days in order to avoid digestive upsets and promote good acceptance. A slow transition is particularly useful for sensitive cats or those very accustomed to a single texture.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Good hydration is essential, especially if the diet is largely based on kibble. You should leave several clean water points available and, if needed, offer more wet food or a water fountain to encourage drinking.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats should remain occasional and be included in the total daily ration. They can be useful for play, training or mental stimulation, but an excess quickly promotes weight gain.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh the ration to avoid indoor overweight.
- Offer water in several places, possibly a fountain.
- Include treats in the day’s total calorie intake.

### Never feed these foods

Chocolate, onion, garlic, grapes, alcohol, caffeine, cooked bones and many products high in salt or fat should be avoided, as they can cause digestive, neurological, renal disorders or sometimes severe poisoning in cats.
