Health

# The Tonkinese's health

Canada

The Tonkinese is renowned for its great robustness and can live a long time when it benefits from an appropriate diet, regular veterinary follow-up and a stimulating environment. It rarely falls ill, but like any cat it must be monitored seriously throughout its life.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With a life expectancy often between 15 and 20 years, the Tonkinese is among the cats that can accompany their family for the long term. This longevity is fully expressed when its weight remains stable, when its daily activity is respected and when veterinary prevention is followed consistently.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

The Tonkinese is a solid cat, not very fragile on a daily basis and generally well equipped to face the small hazards of domestic life. Its good constitution does not rule out the usual vigilance regarding vaccines, parasites, oral hygiene and overall condition over the years.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Even though the breed is generally very robust, prevention remains essential to preserve its longevity and comfort of life. Particular attention must be paid to the general condition, the mouth, weight, activity level and any change in behavior that may reveal an emerging health problem.

- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: Certain feline lines are predisposed to this disease of the heart muscle, hence the value of monitoring and, depending on origins, screening.
- Chronic kidney disease: Common in older cats, it warrants monitoring appetite, thirst, and regular blood tests.
- Periodontal disease: Tartar and gum inflammation are common and require consistent oral hygiene.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Tonkinese adapts well to a temperate indoor life, but its short coat protects it less than a thick coat against prolonged cold. In cool periods, it appreciates warm bedding and rooms without drafts, while in summer it must always have shade, fresh water and calm areas.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

This active cat generally maintains its figure well when it plays, climbs and benefits from a ration adjusted to its age and its energy expenditure. Preventing overweight involves measured meals, daily play and regular monitoring of the silhouette, especially in individuals living exclusively indoors.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Schedule a veterinary check-up at least once a year.
- Monitor the mouth, weight, and activity level over time.
- Keep vaccinations and parasite protection up to date.
- Consult promptly in case of decreased appetite or a change in behavior.

Vaccination

## Tonkinese vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Tonkinese need? Like all cats, Tonkineses should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: Typhus (panleukopenia) and Coryza. Kittens receive their initial Tonkinese vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year, even if they live indoors. Depending on their lifestyle (outdoor access, living with other cats, shows, travel), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Feline leukemia (FeLV), Rabies and Chlamydiosis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Typhus (panleukopenia)Core Feline panleukopenia (cat parvovirus) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| CoryzaCore Feline herpesvirus and calicivirus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| Feline leukemia (FeLV)Depending on lifestyle Feline leukemia virus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Outdoor cats, cats living in a group or in a cattery |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, cat shows and most boarding kennels |
| ChlamydiosisDepending on lifestyle Chlamydia felis (contagious conjunctivitis) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Cats living in groups, catteries, show cats |

Adult Tonkinese booster shots are given annually for feline herpesvirus and feline leukemia if your cat goes outdoors. For feline panleukopenia, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your cat's lifestyle.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Tonkinese

An annual veterinary check-up, reinforced with age, makes it possible to monitor dentition, weight, vaccination status and general condition. Depending on the individual context, the veterinarian may also recommend preventive blood tests in the mature adult and the senior.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder
