Health

# The Somali's health

United States

The Somali is an overall robust cat, but certain hereditary sensitivities and a few points of vigilance justify careful monitoring. Its health depends greatly on the quality of breeding, weight control, oral hygiene, and an environment that respects its need for activity.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

When it benefits from a balanced diet, good veterinary follow-up and a stimulating lifestyle, the Somali often reaches an advanced age for a purebred cat. A stable lifestyle contributes greatly to preserving its mobility, tone and quality of life over the years.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

The Somali shows good overall robustness and an athletic physique, with a body that often remains resilient when breeding is serious. This sturdiness does not rule out vigilance regarding certain hereditary diseases known in lines close to the Abyssinian, nor the risk of overweight in individuals that are too greedy or not active enough.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Vigilance must focus on kidney function, oral and dental health, weight and hereditary diseases that may affect certain lines. Regular monitoring, careful observation of appetite, vision, the condition of the teeth and overall activity make it possible to quickly identify a potential problem.

- Renal amyloidosis: This condition can progressively impair kidney function and warrants particular vigilance in certain bloodlines.
- Periodontal disease: The breed may show oral and dental sensitivity, hence the value of regular checks of the teeth and gums.
- Progressive retinal atrophy: This hereditary eye disease leads to a progressive deterioration of vision in affected individuals.
- Pyruvate kinase deficiency: This genetic disorder can cause anemia of varying severity and is screened for in at-risk bloodlines.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Somali adapts well to life in a temperate indoor environment. Its coat protects it adequately in a moderately cool atmosphere, but it does not like sudden changes or prolonged exposure to damp cold. In summer, it must be able to rest in a calm, ventilated space sheltered from excessive heat.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

This cat is greedy and can gain weight if its ration is not controlled or if its daily life lacks activity. It is preferable to measure portions, limit treats and encourage movement with games, elevated courses and moments of interaction spread throughout the day.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Monitor weight and body condition all year round.
- Check teeth and gums regularly.
- Choose a breeder who tests bloodlines for known hereditary diseases.

Vaccination

## Somali vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Somali need? Like all cats, Somalis should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: Typhus (panleukopenia) and Coryza. Kittens receive their initial Somali vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year, even if they live indoors. Depending on their lifestyle (outdoor access, living with other cats, shows, travel), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Feline leukemia (FeLV), Rabies and Chlamydiosis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Typhus (panleukopenia)Core Feline panleukopenia (cat parvovirus) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| CoryzaCore Feline herpesvirus and calicivirus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| Feline leukemia (FeLV)Depending on lifestyle Feline leukemia virus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Outdoor cats, cats living in a group or in a cattery |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, cat shows and most boarding kennels |
| ChlamydiosisDepending on lifestyle Chlamydia felis (contagious conjunctivitis) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Cats living in groups, catteries, show cats |

Adult Somali booster shots are given annually for feline herpesvirus and feline leukemia if your cat goes outdoors. For feline panleukopenia, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your cat's lifestyle.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Somali

It is relevant to favor breeding cats monitored for hereditary conditions described in the breed and closely related lines, notably pyruvate kinase deficiency and certain ocular disorders such as progressive retinal atrophy. Regular dental check-ups and weight monitoring usefully complement routine veterinary follow-up.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
