Health

# The Snowshoe's health

United States

The Snowshoe is generally considered a robust cat. No specific hereditary disease is clearly identified as characteristic of the breed, but routine veterinary follow-up remains essential for vaccination, parasite prevention and monitoring of weight, the mouth and overall condition.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With good living conditions, an appropriate diet and regular veterinary follow-up, the Snowshoe most often lives between 12 and 15 years. An enriched indoor life, maintaining a stable weight and preventing infectious diseases contribute greatly to its longevity.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

The Snowshoe generally shows good overall robustness and rarely falls ill when it is well cared for. Its simple maintenance and its behavioral balance work in its favor, but as with any cat, the quality of the breeding, prevention, and the daily environment strongly influence its actual health.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Even if the breed is not known for major hereditary conditions, vigilance should focus on preventive medicine, body condition, oral and dental hygiene, and the early detection of any change in appetite, behavior, or mobility.

- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: Some feline lines are predisposed to this heart muscle disease, hence the value of monitoring and, depending on the origins, screening.
- Chronic kidney disease: Common in older cats, it warrants monitoring appetite, thirst, and regular blood tests.
- Periodontal disease: Tartar and gingival inflammation are common and require consistent oral hygiene.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Snowshoe tolerates a temperate climate fairly well and is not particularly afraid of moderate cold thanks to its dense coat, but it must not be exposed to extreme conditions. Like most pet cats, it is more comfortable in a stable indoor environment, sheltered from both high heat and intense cold.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

The Snowshoe must receive a ration adjusted to its age, its sterilization and its activity level. As it is greedy and close to humans, excess treats or overfeeding can promote weight gain. Regular monitoring of the silhouette and body mass makes it possible to quickly correct deviations.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Schedule an annual veterinary check-up with vaccination boosters and parasite prevention.
- Regularly monitor weight, appetite, and coat quality.
- Check the eyes, ears, and oral-dental condition throughout the year.

Vaccination

## Snowshoe vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Snowshoe need? Like all cats, Snowshoes should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: Typhus (panleukopenia) and Coryza. Kittens receive their initial Snowshoe vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year, even if they live indoors. Depending on their lifestyle (outdoor access, living with other cats, shows, travel), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Feline leukemia (FeLV), Rabies and Chlamydiosis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Typhus (panleukopenia)Core Feline panleukopenia (cat parvovirus) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| CoryzaCore Feline herpesvirus and calicivirus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| Feline leukemia (FeLV)Depending on lifestyle Feline leukemia virus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Outdoor cats, cats living in a group or in a cattery |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, cat shows and most boarding kennels |
| ChlamydiosisDepending on lifestyle Chlamydia felis (contagious conjunctivitis) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Cats living in groups, catteries, show cats |

Adult Snowshoe booster shots are given annually for feline herpesvirus and feline leukemia if your cat goes outdoors. For feline panleukopenia, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your cat's lifestyle.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Snowshoe

An annual veterinary examination, supplemented by booster vaccinations and parasite prevention, is the foundation. Particular attention to dental condition, weight and coat quality also helps to spot early the most frequent imbalances in pet cats.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
