Feeding

# Feeding your Pixie-bob well

United States

Large, muscular cat, the Pixie-bob needs a complete diet, rich in animal proteins and adjusted to its ideal weight. Quality kibble or a mixed diet are suitable, provided that energy is controlled.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Kitten: Choose a complete food for growth, rich in animal proteins, divided into several small meals.
- Adult: Adjust the ration to activity and sterilization while regularly monitoring body condition.
- Senior: Have the weight, dentition and kidney function checked, then adapt the food to age and any possible pathologies.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

Premium kibble for large cats or a mix of kibble/complete wet food are suitable. Favor good digestibility and a profile that supports muscle mass without excess calories.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

The ration depends on the ideal weight, age, neutering and actual activity. An adult of 5 to 7 kg often receives the equivalent of 55 to 80 g of kibble per day, to be adjusted according to the food.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 4 - 5 kg | 50 - 70 g | 2 |
| 5 - 7 kg | 60 - 85 g | 2 |
| 7 - 8 kg | 75 - 95 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any change of food must be gradual over about a week, by gradually increasing the proportion of the new food to limit digestive upsets.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Fresh, clean water must remain available at all times, ideally in several places away from the litter box and food. A fountain often helps cats that don’t drink much.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats should remain occasional and represent less than 10% of the daily energy intake. They should be deducted from the ration in order to avoid weight gain.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh the ration: muscular males quickly gain weight if they are too sedentary.
- Offer daily hunting games before the meal.
- Check the extra claws during grooming.

### Never feed these foods

Chocolate, onion, garlic, leek, grapes, alcohol, caffeine, xylitol, cooked bones, very fatty leftovers and many human medications are toxic or dangerous for the cat. In case of suspected ingestion, contact a veterinarian quickly.
