Health

# The Persian's health

Iran

The Persian is an endearing cat but one that requires particular attention in terms of health and maintenance. Its morphology, especially in the most typey lines, can promote certain respiratory, ocular and dental problems. Regular veterinary monitoring and serious breeding selection are essential.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With attentive care, a suitable diet and good medical follow-up, the Persian can live for many years. Its life expectancy varies depending on the quality of the breeding, its lifestyle and the presence or absence of hereditary predispositions. Well-monitored individuals often live a long time indoors.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

The Persian is not considered a particularly hardy breed. Its abundant coat, its sensitive eyes and certain hereditary frailties require greater vigilance than in cats that are more natural in their morphology. Regular hygiene and preventive check-ups clearly improve its comfort of life.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

This breed deserves sustained attention from the youngest age in order to quickly detect respiratory, ocular, dental or renal disorders. The choice of a serious breeder, able to present the relevant tests, matters a lot in prevention. On a daily basis, the slightest change in appetite, breathing or the appearance of the coat must be taken seriously.

- Tearing and eye irritations: The flattened face promotes, in some individuals, runny eyes, irritations, and a need for regular cleaning.
- Breathing difficulties: Very brachycephalic lines may have noisy or less efficient breathing, especially in cases of heat or overweight.
- Polycystic kidney disease: This hereditary condition is known in the breed and justifies serious selection as well as screening when relevant.
- Dental problems: The head conformation can promote dental crowding and requires good oral hygiene.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Persian tolerates temperate environments better than excessive heat. Its dense coat can bother it during hot periods and its respiratory comfort must be monitored in individuals with a very short nose. In winter, indoor life generally suits it very well.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

Even if it is calm, the Persian must not become sedentary to the point of gaining weight. A well-measured ration, limited treats and a few gentle daily activities help preserve its mobility and respiratory comfort. Weight monitoring is particularly useful in neutered cats living exclusively indoors.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Gently clean the eyes if discharge appears.
- Monitor breathing during hot periods or in case of overweight.
- Have teeth, eyes and kidney function checked regularly.

Vaccination

## Persian vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Persian need? Like all cats, Persians should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: Typhus (panleukopenia) and Coryza. Kittens receive their initial Persian vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year, even if they live indoors. Depending on their lifestyle (outdoor access, living with other cats, shows, travel), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Feline leukemia (FeLV), Rabies and Chlamydiosis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Typhus (panleukopenia)Core Feline panleukopenia (cat parvovirus) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| CoryzaCore Feline herpesvirus and calicivirus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| Feline leukemia (FeLV)Depending on lifestyle Feline leukemia virus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Outdoor cats, cats living in a group or in a cattery |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, cat shows and most boarding kennels |
| ChlamydiosisDepending on lifestyle Chlamydia felis (contagious conjunctivitis) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Cats living in groups, catteries, show cats |

Adult Persian booster shots are given annually for feline herpesvirus and feline leukemia if your cat goes outdoors. For feline panleukopenia, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your cat's lifestyle.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Persian

It is relevant to monitor kidney function, the condition of the eyes, dentition and the quality of breathing. Depending on the line, screening for polycystic kidney disease may be particularly important. Regular veterinary check-ups help to detect early the most frequent complications.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder
