Feeding

# Feeding your Ocicat well

United States

The Ocicat needs a complete and balanced diet, adapted to its age, its activity level and its physiological status. Good quality food helps support its muscle mass, its energy and the condition of its skin as well as its coat.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Kitten: A complete growth diet, split into several meals, supports muscular and bone development.
- Adult: The ration must cover the maintenance of muscle mass without excess energy, especially in a cat living mostly indoors.
- Senior: With age, the diet must remain highly digestible, palatable, and adapted to changes in weight as well as kidney function.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

A diet rich in good-quality animal proteins generally suits this active and muscular cat well. The choice between kibble, wet food or a mixed diet must take into account its digestive tolerance, its hydration and the veterinarian’s advice.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

Quantities must be adjusted individually according to the weight, activity, age and energy density of the chosen food. Regular monitoring of body condition is more reliable than a fixed ration identical for all individuals.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 3 - 4 kg | 54 - 78 g | 2 |
| 4 - 6 kg | 70 - 100 g | 2 |
| 6 - 7 kg | 86 - 121 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any dietary transition must be gradual over several days in order to limit digestive upsets and promote good acceptance. In case of particular sensitivity, it is preferable to proceed more slowly and to monitor appetite as well as stools.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Permanent access to clean, fresh water is essential. Many cats drink more when they have several water points in the home or a suitable fountain.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats should remain occasional and represent a small part of the daily intake. They are mainly useful as a tool for training, occupation or positive reinforcement, without unbalancing the main ration.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weighing the ration helps avoid daily overfeeding.
- Splitting meals promotes a more regular food intake.
- Combining fresh water and wet food can improve hydration.

### Never feed these foods

As with other cats, it is necessary to avoid in particular chocolate, onion, garlic, grapes, alcohol, caffeine, cooked bones and very salty or fatty foods, as they can cause digestive, neurological or kidney disorders that are sometimes serious.
