Health

# The Napoleon / Minuet's health

United States

Two issues dominate: locomotion linked to short legs (lordosis, discomfort) and fragilities inherited from the Persian (eyes, breathing, kidneys). A kitten that is too low, too flat-faced or already stiff is not a good choice. Veterinary follow-up must be regular.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With attentive care, an appropriate diet and good medical follow-up, the Napoléon / Minuet can live from 10 to 15 years. Longevity depends on the quality of the breeding, lifestyle and hereditary predispositions.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

Indoor cat, not very hardy. Well monitored and slim, it can live many good years. Obesity is its main enemy.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Gait, back, breathing, eyes, thirst, difficulty getting into the litter box. Any decrease in jumping may indicate pain.

- Locomotor constraint: Short legs can be accompanied by an arched back, lordosis, or chronic discomfort.
- Eyes and short face: The Persian contribution promotes tearing and sometimes reduced respiratory comfort.
- Aggravating overweight: Every extra gram weighs on limbs that are already short.
- Kidneys: Kidney monitoring is prudent in lines close to the Persian.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

Temperate indoor. Heat to monitor if the face is short. No free roaming.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

The Napoléon / Minuet must maintain a silhouette suited to its morphology, with palpable ribs without excess. The ration must match actual activity, age and sterilization. Regular weighing prevents overly significant variations.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Weigh often and keep a lean silhouette.
- Provide low-entry litter boxes.
- Install step access to perches.
- Consult as soon as it avoids jumping or the back arches.

Vaccination

## Napoleon / Minuet vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Napoleon / Minuet need? Like all cats, Napoleon / Minuets should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: Typhus (panleukopenia) and Coryza. Kittens receive their initial Napoleon / Minuet vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year, even if they live indoors. Depending on their lifestyle (outdoor access, living with other cats, shows, travel), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Feline leukemia (FeLV), Rabies and Chlamydiosis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Typhus (panleukopenia)Core Feline panleukopenia (cat parvovirus) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| CoryzaCore Feline herpesvirus and calicivirus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| Feline leukemia (FeLV)Depending on lifestyle Feline leukemia virus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Outdoor cats, cats living in a group or in a cattery |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, cat shows and most boarding kennels |
| ChlamydiosisDepending on lifestyle Chlamydia felis (contagious conjunctivitis) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Cats living in groups, catteries, show cats |

Adult Napoleon / Minuet booster shots are given annually for feline herpesvirus and feline leukemia if your cat goes outdoors. For feline panleukopenia, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your cat's lifestyle.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Napoleon / Minuet

Locomotion, kidneys, eyes, breathing. Ask about the Munchkin and Persian origins, and the breeding policy on leg height.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
