Health

# The Munchkin's health

United States

The Munchkin is generally considered a rather robust cat, but its morphology requires particular vigilance. Its short legs can accentuate certain mechanical constraints and justify careful monitoring of weight, mobility and quality of life over the years.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With good care, an appropriate diet and a balanced lifestyle, the Munchkin often lives between 12 and 15 years. Preventing excess weight and locomotor monitoring play an important role in preserving its comfort over time.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

The breed has overall rather robust health, provided it comes from a reputable breeding program and benefits from regular veterinary follow-up. Selection and weight control are particularly important to limit strain on the spine and joints.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

In the Munchkin, monitoring focuses mainly on the locomotor system and the back. Any decrease in activity, discomfort when moving, difficulty jumping or apparent pain warrants prompt veterinary advice.

- Osteoarthritis: Mechanical constraints linked to morphology can promote the onset or worsening of joint wear in some individuals.
- Lordosis: An excessive curvature of the spine has already been observed in some Munchkins and requires veterinary monitoring depending on its severity.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Munchkin adapts well to indoor life and copes correctly with seasonal variations in a temperate home. The semi-longhaired variety tolerates cool weather a little better, but as with any cat, prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures should be avoided and comfortable resting areas should be provided.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

Weight control is essential in this breed. Excess weight increases strain on the short limbs and the back, which can impair mobility and comfort. A measured ration, monitoring body condition, and daily play are therefore strongly recommended.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Monitor appetite, urination, and weight.
- Keep vaccinations, deworming, and identification up to date.
- Consult if the cat isolates itself, vomits, or stops eating.

Vaccination

## Munchkin vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Munchkin need? Like all cats, Munchkins should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: Typhus (panleukopenia) and Coryza. Kittens receive their initial Munchkin vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year, even if they live indoors. Depending on their lifestyle (outdoor access, living with other cats, shows, travel), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Feline leukemia (FeLV), Rabies and Chlamydiosis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Typhus (panleukopenia)Core Feline panleukopenia (cat parvovirus) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| CoryzaCore Feline herpesvirus and calicivirus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| Feline leukemia (FeLV)Depending on lifestyle Feline leukemia virus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Outdoor cats, cats living in a group or in a cattery |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, cat shows and most boarding kennels |
| ChlamydiosisDepending on lifestyle Chlamydia felis (contagious conjunctivitis) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Cats living in groups, catteries, show cats |

Adult Munchkin booster shots are given annually for feline herpesvirus and feline leukemia if your cat goes outdoors. For feline panleukopenia, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your cat's lifestyle.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Munchkin

A regular clinical examination, with attention paid to mobility, the spine and body condition, is particularly useful. If there is any doubt about locomotion or pain, imaging examinations can be discussed with the veterinarian.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
