Health

# The Mandarin's health

United States

The Mandarin is generally a robust cat, but its monitoring must remain attentive, notably for the eyes, the heart and maintaining a stable weight. Like many Oriental cats, it benefits from rigorous breeding and regular veterinary follow-up.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With good living conditions, an appropriate diet and regular veterinary monitoring, the Mandarin can live a long time. Its longevity is generally good for a medium-sized and active cat.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

Its overall health is rather good, without being completely free of hereditary fragilities in certain lines. The quality of selection and lifestyle hygiene play an important role in its long-term robustness.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Particular attention must be paid to screening for ocular and cardiac conditions reported in the family of semi-longhaired Oriental cats. Monitoring weight and general condition remains useful in a less active or neutered subject.

- Eye conditions: Regular eye monitoring is recommended, with vigilance regarding hereditary disorders found in the Oriental family.
- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: Screening may be relevant depending on the lineage, as certain heart conditions are mentioned in closely related breeds.
- Overweight: A lack of activity or overly rich portions can promote weight gain that is detrimental to its silhouette and its health.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Mandarin tolerates a temperate indoor environment better than a cold or humid environment. Its silky coat and the absence of a pronounced undercoat do not make it a particularly hardy cat when faced with cold.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

Its silhouette must remain slender and athletic. A ration adjusted to its activity, combined with daily play, helps prevent overweight.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Monitor appetite, urination, and weight.
- Keep vaccinations, deworming, and identification up to date.
- Consult a veterinarian if the cat isolates itself, vomits, or stops eating.

Vaccination

## Mandarin vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Mandarin need? Like all cats, Mandarins should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: Typhus (panleukopenia) and Coryza. Kittens receive their initial Mandarin vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year, even if they live indoors. Depending on their lifestyle (outdoor access, living with other cats, shows, travel), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Feline leukemia (FeLV), Rabies and Chlamydiosis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Typhus (panleukopenia)Core Feline panleukopenia (cat parvovirus) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| CoryzaCore Feline herpesvirus and calicivirus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| Feline leukemia (FeLV)Depending on lifestyle Feline leukemia virus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Outdoor cats, cats living in a group or in a cattery |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, cat shows and most boarding kennels |
| ChlamydiosisDepending on lifestyle Chlamydia felis (contagious conjunctivitis) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Cats living in groups, catteries, show cats |

Adult Mandarin booster shots are given annually for feline herpesvirus and feline leukemia if your cat goes outdoors. For feline panleukopenia, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your cat's lifestyle.

Which boosters does your Mandarin need?

Enter your companion's age to see which vaccines are due now and when the next boosters are needed.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Mandarin

It is relevant to ask for the tests and assessments carried out by the breeder, then to ensure regular veterinary follow-up with attention paid to the eyes, the heart, the weight and the oral and dental condition.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
