Health

# The Maine Coon's health

United States

Behind its robust appearance, the Maine Coon has several hereditary predispositions that justify serious selection of breeding cats and attentive veterinary monitoring. Good lifestyle hygiene, controlled weight and regular check-ups help preserve its quality of life over the long term.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With appropriate care, a balanced diet and regular medical monitoring, the Maine Coon lives on average between 10 and 15 years. Longevity varies depending on the lineage, lifestyle, reproductive status and the quality of health monitoring from the earliest age.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

The Maine Coon generally tolerates family life and cool climates well thanks to its solid build and protective coat. Its apparent robustness should not, however, make one forget certain genetic fragilities known in the breed, in particular on the cardiac and locomotor level.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Before adoption, it is preferable to favor a cattery that tests its breeding cats and clearly documents health history. Afterwards, monitoring should focus on the heart, joints, weight and oral health, with particular attention in cats from at-risk lines.

- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: Hereditary heart condition known in the breed, sometimes silent at first, which calls for rigorous selection of bloodlines and appropriate veterinary monitoring.
- Hip dysplasia: This joint abnormality can cause pain, stiffness, and locomotor discomfort, especially in heavier cats or those from predisposed bloodlines.
- Spinal muscular atrophy: Hereditary neuromuscular disease identified in the Maine Coon, responsible for progressive weakness of the limbs in affected individuals.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Maine Coon generally tolerates cold well thanks to its dense coat and its morphology, but it may be less comfortable during high heat. In summer, it must always have fresh water, a well-ventilated space and resting areas sheltered from direct sunlight.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

This large cat must remain powerful without becoming overweight. Neutering, indoor living and greediness can encourage a gradual weight gain, hence the benefit of measuring portions, offering daily play and regularly monitoring body condition.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Scheduling an annual veterinary check-up, then more frequent ones with age, helps monitor the heart, weight and mobility.
- Maintaining regular brushing limits knots and excessive hair ingestion.
- Monitoring shortness of breath, exercise intolerance or an unusual limp justifies a prompt consultation.
- Requesting the available screenings before adoption reduces the risk of unpleasant surprises regarding hereditary diseases.

Vaccination

## Maine Coon vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Maine Coon need? Like all cats, Maine Coons should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: Typhus (panleukopenia) and Coryza. Kittens receive their initial Maine Coon vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year, even if they live indoors. Depending on their lifestyle (outdoor access, living with other cats, shows, travel), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Feline leukemia (FeLV), Rabies and Chlamydiosis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Typhus (panleukopenia)Core Feline panleukopenia (cat parvovirus) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| CoryzaCore Feline herpesvirus and calicivirus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| Feline leukemia (FeLV)Depending on lifestyle Feline leukemia virus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Outdoor cats, cats living in a group or in a cattery |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, cat shows and most boarding kennels |
| ChlamydiosisDepending on lifestyle Chlamydia felis (contagious conjunctivitis) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Cats living in groups, catteries, show cats |

Adult Maine Coon booster shots are given annually for feline herpesvirus and feline leukemia if your cat goes outdoors. For feline panleukopenia, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your cat's lifestyle.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Maine Coon

Serious monitoring is based on routine examinations, but also on targeted screenings depending on the lineage and the context. A cardiac ultrasound may be recommended in case of doubt or in at-risk lineages, while hip evaluation and certain genetic tests useful in breeding help to better prevent the main conditions known in the breed.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder
