Health

# The Lykoi's health

United States

The hair mutation can be accompanied by more exposed skin: sun, cold, irritations. It is necessary to distinguish a molt in a "werewolf cycle" from dermatitis. A breeding program that also works with non-mutated cats preserves diversity. The rest of the follow-up is that of an active indoor cat.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With attentive care, an appropriate diet and good medical follow-up, the Lykoi can live from 12 to 16 years. Longevity depends on the quality of the breeding, the lifestyle and hereditary predispositions.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

Less protected than a normal-haired cat. Indoors, well fed and monitored, it often proves robust and playful. Free outdoor access is not recommended.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Redness, scabs, superinfection, sunburn, chills, weight loss. Patchy shedding without inflammation may be normal; infection is not.

- Exposed skin: Sparse coat provides poor protection from the sun, cold, and friction.
- Marked shedding cycles: Some individuals lose a lot of hair periodically; you must monitor for the absence of inflammation.
- Irritations and parasites: Barer skin itches and gets infected more quickly.
- Thermal sensitivity: The lack of undercoat reduces comfort in winter.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

Sensitive to cold and direct sunlight. Light coat in winter, shade in summer, never a south-facing balcony without shelter. Heated indoors in winter.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

The Lykoi must maintain a silhouette suited to its morphology, with palpable ribs without excess. The ration must match actual activity, age and sterilization. Regular weighing prevents overly significant variations.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Inspect the skin each week.
- Protect from direct sun and cold.
- Do not confuse patchy shedding with an infection.
- Provide daily play: it is a lively cat.

Vaccination

## Lykoi vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Lykoi need? Like all cats, Lykois should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: Typhus (panleukopenia) and Coryza. Kittens receive their initial Lykoi vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year, even if they live indoors. Depending on their lifestyle (outdoor access, living with other cats, shows, travel), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Feline leukemia (FeLV), Rabies and Chlamydiosis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Typhus (panleukopenia)Core Feline panleukopenia (cat parvovirus) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| CoryzaCore Feline herpesvirus and calicivirus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| Feline leukemia (FeLV)Depending on lifestyle Feline leukemia virus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Outdoor cats, cats living in a group or in a cattery |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, cat shows and most boarding kennels |
| ChlamydiosisDepending on lifestyle Chlamydia felis (contagious conjunctivitis) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Cats living in groups, catteries, show cats |

Adult Lykoi booster shots are given annually for feline herpesvirus and feline leukemia if your cat goes outdoors. For feline panleukopenia, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your cat's lifestyle.

Which boosters does your Lykoi need?

Enter your companion's age to see which vaccines are due now and when the next boosters are needed.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Lykoi

Skin, teeth, weight, general examination. Ask how the breeding program manages the mutation and any possible hair regrowth.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
