Health

# The LaPerm's health

United States

The LaPerm is considered a generally robust cat, with no major hereditary predisposition clearly established to date. It rarely gets sick when its lifestyle, diet and veterinary follow-up are appropriate. As with any cat, prevention remains essential to maintain this good health over time.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With a life expectancy often between 13 and 20 years, the LaPerm can accompany its household for a long time if its lifestyle hygiene is well cared for. A balanced diet, a stable weight, an enriched environment and regular veterinary follow-up promote a fine longevity.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

This breed has good overall sturdiness and copes well with family life when its needs for rest, play and stimulation are respected. Its athletic and active cat profile helps it maintain good physical condition, provided excessive sedentary behavior is avoided.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Even if no specific breed-related disease is particularly highlighted, it remains important to monitor dental condition, coat quality, weight, as well as any change in behavior, appetite, or activity. Simple but regular vigilance is most often enough to detect a potential problem early.

- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: Certain feline lines are predisposed to this heart muscle disease, hence the value of monitoring and, depending on the origins, screening.
- Chronic kidney disease: Common in older cats, it warrants monitoring appetite, thirst, and regular blood tests.
- Periodontal disease: Tartar and gingival inflammation are common and require ongoing oral hygiene.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The LaPerm adapts well to a temperate indoor setting. The semi-long-haired variety offers a little more protection than the short-haired variety, but this cat remains more comfortable in a stable environment than when faced with marked climatic variations. In case of high heat or prolonged cold, a well-regulated home remains preferable.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

The LaPerm more easily maintains good condition when it has vertical space, games, and measured meals. Like many indoor cats, it can gain weight if its activity decreases while intake remains too rich. Monthly monitoring of body shape and weight helps prevent overweight.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Monitor appetite, urination and weight.
- Keep vaccinations, deworming and identification up to date.
- Consult if the cat isolates itself, vomits or stops eating.

Vaccination

## LaPerm vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a LaPerm need? Like all cats, LaPerms should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: Typhus (panleukopenia) and Coryza. Kittens receive their initial LaPerm vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year, even if they live indoors. Depending on their lifestyle (outdoor access, living with other cats, shows, travel), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Feline leukemia (FeLV), Rabies and Chlamydiosis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Typhus (panleukopenia)Core Feline panleukopenia (cat parvovirus) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| CoryzaCore Feline herpesvirus and calicivirus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| Feline leukemia (FeLV)Depending on lifestyle Feline leukemia virus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Outdoor cats, cats living in a group or in a cattery |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, cat shows and most boarding kennels |
| ChlamydiosisDepending on lifestyle Chlamydia felis (contagious conjunctivitis) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Cats living in groups, catteries, show cats |

Adult LaPerm booster shots are given annually for feline herpesvirus and feline leukemia if your cat goes outdoors. For feline panleukopenia, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your cat's lifestyle.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy LaPerm

Annual veterinary check-ups, vaccination, parasite prevention and regular oral and dental check-ups constitute a relevant basis. In a cat intended for breeding, enhanced monitoring and serious selection of bloodlines remain recommended to preserve the health quality of the breed.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder
