Health

# The European Shorthair's health

Europe

The European is generally a sturdy cat, not well known for accumulating pronounced hereditary predispositions. Its hardiness makes it a breed reputed to be robust, provided it benefits from routine veterinary care, a suitable diet and a good level of activity.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With a balanced lifestyle, the European often lives between 10 and 15 years, sometimes longer. Longevity depends mainly on the quality of the diet, preventive healthcare, maintaining a proper weight, and the safety of its environment.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

Its constitution is generally robust and it copes well with day-to-day variations when it is properly cared for. The absence of extreme selection on its morphotype helps preserve a good overall balance.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

There is no major list of typical diseases specific to the breed, but vigilance remains useful regarding common problems in domestic cats such as overweight, dental disorders, parasites and hairballs during the moulting period.

- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: Certain feline lines are predisposed to this heart muscle disease, hence the value of monitoring and, depending on the origins, screening.
- Chronic kidney disease: Common in older cats, it warrants monitoring appetite, thirst, and regular blood tests.
- Periodontal disease: Tartar and gum inflammation are common and require consistent oral hygiene.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The European tolerates temperate and rather cool climates well thanks to its short, dense coat. In hot periods, it must have fresh water, shade and quiet places to rest, especially if it lives indoors with little ventilation.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

Like many adaptable cats, he can gain weight if his activity decreases while portions remain too generous. Portion control, daily play, and regular monitoring of his body shape help prevent obesity.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Plan an annual veterinary check-up, even for a cat that seems in perfect health.
- Monitor weight and body shape after spaying/neutering.
- Keep vaccinations and parasite prevention up to date.
- Consult a veterinarian in case of decreased appetite, repeated vomiting, or a change in behavior.

Vaccination

## European Shorthair vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a European Shorthair need? Like all cats, European Shorthairs should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: Typhus (panleukopenia) and Coryza. Kittens receive their initial European Shorthair vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year, even if they live indoors. Depending on their lifestyle (outdoor access, living with other cats, shows, travel), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Feline leukemia (FeLV), Rabies and Chlamydiosis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Typhus (panleukopenia)Core Feline panleukopenia (cat parvovirus) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| CoryzaCore Feline herpesvirus and calicivirus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| Feline leukemia (FeLV)Depending on lifestyle Feline leukemia virus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Outdoor cats, cats living in a group or in a cattery |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, cat shows and most boarding kennels |
| ChlamydiosisDepending on lifestyle Chlamydia felis (contagious conjunctivitis) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Cats living in groups, catteries, show cats |

Adult European Shorthair booster shots are given annually for feline herpesvirus and feline leukemia if your cat goes outdoors. For feline panleukopenia, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your cat's lifestyle.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy European Shorthair

An annual veterinary exam, vaccination, parasite prevention and oral-dental monitoring form the basis of its follow-up. In an adult or senior cat, a more complete check-up may be useful depending on lifestyle and body condition.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.
