Health

# The Cymric's health

Isle of Man

The Cymric is a generally robust cat, but its selection around the absence of a tail requires particular vigilance. Some individuals may present anomalies linked to the mutation of the Manx gene, with locomotor or digestive repercussions. Regular veterinary monitoring and serious selection of breeding cats are therefore essential.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

When it is well cared for and kept at a proper weight, the Cymric can live a long time, often between 15 and 20 years. This fine longevity depends on the quality of the breeding, veterinary prevention and monitoring for any possible disorders associated with Manx syndrome.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

The Cymric shows decent robustness, but not exceptional, because its characteristic mutation can weaken certain individuals. A well-born, well-maintained and properly monitored subject nevertheless leads a comfortable and active life for many years.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Vigilance must focus primarily on the spine, mobility, elimination and growth, especially in young cats. Any abnormal gait, recurrent constipation, pain or difficulty moving warrants prompt veterinary advice.

- Manx syndrome: The mutation responsible for the absence of a tail may be accompanied by vertebral and neurological abnormalities with consequences that vary depending on the individual.
- Arthritis: Spinal issues and particular biomechanical constraints may promote joint pain in some individuals.
- Intestinal obstruction: A narrow anal passage or associated malformations may lead to constipation and elimination difficulties requiring prompt follow-up.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

Thanks to its dense coat and thick undercoat, the Cymric tolerates cool environments rather well. On the other hand, like many cats with a thick coat, it appreciates high heat less and must always have quiet, airy and shaded places in summer.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

The Cymric may tend to become overweight if it lacks activity or if it receives portions that are too generous. Portion control, daily play, and regular weighing help preserve its figure, its joints, and its digestive comfort.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Monitor gait, jumps, and any unusual stiffness.
- Consult promptly in case of repeated constipation or difficulty eliminating.
- Maintain a stable weight to limit joint strain.
- Schedule regular veterinary follow-up with vaccination and an annual check-up.

Vaccination

## Cymric vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Cymric need? Like all cats, Cymrics should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: Typhus (panleukopenia) and Coryza. Kittens receive their initial Cymric vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year, even if they live indoors. Depending on their lifestyle (outdoor access, living with other cats, shows, travel), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Feline leukemia (FeLV), Rabies and Chlamydiosis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Typhus (panleukopenia)Core Feline panleukopenia (cat parvovirus) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| CoryzaCore Feline herpesvirus and calicivirus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| Feline leukemia (FeLV)Depending on lifestyle Feline leukemia virus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Outdoor cats, cats living in a group or in a cattery |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, cat shows and most boarding kennels |
| ChlamydiosisDepending on lifestyle Chlamydia felis (contagious conjunctivitis) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Cats living in groups, catteries, show cats |

Adult Cymric booster shots are given annually for feline herpesvirus and feline leukemia if your cat goes outdoors. For feline panleukopenia, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your cat's lifestyle.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Cymric

Before adoption, it is preferable to find out about the lineage and the absence of a history compatible with Manx syndrome. Then, regular clinical examination, weight monitoring and observation of locomotion and transit constitute the main checkpoints.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.
