Feeding

# Feeding your Cymric well

Isle of Man

The Cymric needs a complete, high-quality diet, adapted to its age, body condition and activity level. As the breed can gain weight easily, energy balance and portion control are particularly important.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Kitten: Complete growth food, divided into several small meals.
- Adult: Controlled ration, adapted to sterilization and indoor living.
- Senior: Highly digestible food, while monitoring kidneys, teeth and appetite.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

Premium kibble for neutered or indoor adult cats often suits the Cymric well, possibly supplemented with a portion of wet food to promote hydration. The final choice must take into account age, physiological status and the veterinarian’s recommendations.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

The daily quantity must be adjusted to the ideal weight, the actual expenditure and the energy density of the chosen food. It is preferable to split the ration and to reassess it regularly rather than leaving an overly rich diet available ad libitum.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 3 - 4 kg | 52 - 76 g | 2 |
| 4 - 5 kg | 64 - 92 g | 2 |
| 5 - 6 kg | 76 - 108 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any change in diet must be made gradually over several days in order to limit digestive upsets. A slow transition also makes it easier to better check appetite, tolerance and the impact on bowel movements.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times. Water fountains and the combination of kibble plus wet food can be useful to encourage good daily hydration.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats should remain occasional and be included in the total caloric intake of the day. It is better to favor small, quality rewards and also use play or petting as gratification.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh the ration to avoid indoor overweight.
- Offer water in several places, possibly a fountain.
- Include treats in the day's total calorie intake.

### Never feed these foods

As with other cats, it is necessary to avoid in particular chocolate, onion, garlic, grapes, alcohol, coffee, cooked bones and very fatty or very salty foods, as they can cause digestive, nervous, kidney disorders or sometimes serious poisoning.
