Health

# The Chartreux's health

France

The Chartreux is generally a robust cat, often considered sturdy when it benefits from an appropriate diet, regular veterinary follow-up and a good lifestyle. Its dense coat and build give it good resilience, but this does not exempt it from careful monitoring of its weight and urinary health.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With good care, the Chartreux can live a long time and frequently reaches an advanced age. Its longevity depends mainly on the quality of its diet, its hydration, its physical activity, and the early screening for urinary or kidney problems.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

The Chartreux generally has a solid constitution and copes well with the variations of everyday life. This robustness should not make one forget its possible tendency to be overweight and certain urinary or orthopedic points of vigilance that deserve regular prevention.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Prevention in the Chartreux is based above all on maintaining a stable weight, good hydration and regular veterinary check-ups. Particular attention must be paid to urinary comfort, especially in neutered cats, as well as to the early detection of possible locomotor or renal abnormalities.

- Struvite stones: The breed requires particular vigilance regarding urinary stones, especially in neutered cats or those that are insufficiently hydrated.
- Patellar luxation: Some individuals may show patellar instability, to be monitored in case of lameness or locomotor discomfort.
- Polycystic kidney disease: Cases have been reported and warrant veterinary monitoring in the event of a family history or urinary and renal signs.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

Thanks to its dense coat and well-developed undercoat, the Chartreux tolerates cold and moderate humidity rather well. On the other hand, like all cats with a thick coat, it must be protected from high heat, have access to cool places in summer, and always have water available at will.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

The Chartreux is often greedy and can gain weight if its portions are too rich or if its activity decreases. A measured diet, daily play, weight monitoring and adjusting quantities after neutering are essential to limit the risks of being overweight.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Monitor weight gain after spaying/neutering.
- Encourage daily hydration with several water points.
- Consult promptly in case of urinary difficulties, limping, or decreased appetite.

Vaccination

## Chartreux vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Chartreux need? Like all cats, Chartreuxs should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: Typhus (panleukopenia) and Coryza. Kittens receive their initial Chartreux vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year, even if they live indoors. Depending on their lifestyle (outdoor access, living with other cats, shows, travel), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Feline leukemia (FeLV), Rabies and Chlamydiosis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Typhus (panleukopenia)Core Feline panleukopenia (cat parvovirus) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| CoryzaCore Feline herpesvirus and calicivirus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| Feline leukemia (FeLV)Depending on lifestyle Feline leukemia virus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Outdoor cats, cats living in a group or in a cattery |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, cat shows and most boarding kennels |
| ChlamydiosisDepending on lifestyle Chlamydia felis (contagious conjunctivitis) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Cats living in groups, catteries, show cats |

Adult Chartreux booster shots are given annually for feline herpesvirus and feline leukemia if your cat goes outdoors. For feline panleukopenia, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your cat's lifestyle.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Chartreux

A standard veterinary follow-up with an annual exam, vaccination, weight control and dental monitoring is well suited to the breed. Depending on the lineage and the clinical context, particular attention may be paid to the urinary tract, the kneecaps and kidney function.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.
