Health

# The Céleste's health

The Céleste shows an overall robust profile when selection favors genetic diversity and screening of breeding cats. As with any recently created cat, regular veterinary monitoring and clear traceability of lineages remain essential.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With a balanced diet, a stable weight, preventive care and a safe lifestyle, this cat generally lives between 12 and 16 years. Individual longevity depends in particular on genetics, activity, oral health and how quickly illnesses are taken care of.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

Of medium build and without any extreme morphological particularity, the Céleste has a good capacity for adaptation. Its robustness must nevertheless be maintained through careful selection, regular veterinary prevention and sufficient activity to preserve its muscle mass.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Particular attention must be paid to the heart, kidneys, joints and oral and dental condition. The still recent knowledge of the bloodlines justifies precise monitoring of family history and the reporting of any hereditary condition to breeders.

- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: A thickening of the heart muscle can progress silently and warrants echocardiographic screening of breeding cats.
- Kidney conditions: Monitoring kidney function is useful, particularly with age or in the presence of a history in the lineage.
- Joint disorders: Maintaining a healthy weight and regular activity limits stress on the joints.
- Oral and dental diseases: Tartar and gum inflammation require early prevention and regular veterinary check-ups.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

Its medium-long, dense coat provides adequate protection against moderate cold, but does not eliminate the need for indoor shelter. In hot weather, it must have access to cool rooms, refreshed water and shaded areas, with regular brushing to remove dead undercoat.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

Its moderate activity can promote weight gain if portions are too generous. It is advisable to weigh the ration, regularly monitor the silhouette and weight, then adjust the energy intake with the veterinarian according to age, sterilization and activity level.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Schedule an annual veterinary check-up, then every 6 months for seniors.
- Keep vaccinations and antiparasitic treatments up to date according to lifestyle.
- Brush the coat several times a week and check the skin.
- Regularly examine the teeth, ears, eyes, and claws.
- Consult promptly in case of decreased appetite, breathing discomfort, or urinary changes.

Vaccination

## Céleste vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Céleste need? Like all cats, Célestes should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: Typhus (panleukopenia) and Coryza. Kittens receive their initial Céleste vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year, even if they live indoors. Depending on their lifestyle (outdoor access, living with other cats, shows, travel), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Feline leukemia (FeLV), Rabies and Chlamydiosis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Typhus (panleukopenia)Core Feline panleukopenia (cat parvovirus) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| CoryzaCore Feline herpesvirus and calicivirus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| Feline leukemia (FeLV)Depending on lifestyle Feline leukemia virus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Outdoor cats, cats living in a group or in a cattery |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, cat shows and most boarding kennels |
| ChlamydiosisDepending on lifestyle Chlamydia felis (contagious conjunctivitis) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Cats living in groups, catteries, show cats |

Adult Céleste booster shots are given annually for feline herpesvirus and feline leukemia if your cat goes outdoors. For feline panleukopenia, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your cat's lifestyle.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Céleste

Before any breeding, a complete veterinary examination, an echocardiographic screening for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and a renal evaluation are recommended. FIV and FeLV status, blood group as well as relevant genetic tests depending on the lines must be documented.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
