Health

# The California Spangled's health

United States

The California Spangled is generally robust and rarely gets sick. As with all cats, veterinary prevention, vaccination and regular monitoring remain essential to preserve its health over the long term.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

Its life expectancy is generally between 10 and 18 years. A balanced diet, a stable weight, a stimulating environment and regular preventive care promote a good longevity.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

The breed is reputed to be robust, with no major hereditary predisposition clearly highlighted in reference sources. This good foundation does not rule out normal vigilance regarding overall condition, weight, and infectious prevention.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

The main daily vigilance mainly concerns the general prevention of the domestic cat and the maintenance of a physical condition adapted to its level of activity. Monitoring weight is useful if the cat lives mostly indoors.

- Obesity: The risk increases especially if the cat lives indoors without sufficient exercise and receives an overly generous ration.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

Thanks to its short coat, the California Spangled adapts well to life in a temperate indoor environment. It appreciates the comfort of a protected environment and will need to have resting areas sheltered from excessive cold as well as heat.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

This active cat must receive a ration adapted to its energy expenditure. If it moves little and eats too much, it can gain weight quickly, hence the importance of monitoring its body shape, measured portions and daily play sessions.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Schedule regular veterinary check-ups with vaccinations up to date.
- Monitor weight and adjust the ration according to actual activity.
- Regularly observe the eyes, ears, and overall condition.

Vaccination

## California Spangled vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a California Spangled need? Like all cats, California Spangleds should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: Typhus (panleukopenia) and Coryza. Kittens receive their initial California Spangled vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year, even if they live indoors. Depending on their lifestyle (outdoor access, living with other cats, shows, travel), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Feline leukemia (FeLV), Rabies and Chlamydiosis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Typhus (panleukopenia)Core Feline panleukopenia (cat parvovirus) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| CoryzaCore Feline herpesvirus and calicivirus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| Feline leukemia (FeLV)Depending on lifestyle Feline leukemia virus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Outdoor cats, cats living in a group or in a cattery |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, cat shows and most boarding kennels |
| ChlamydiosisDepending on lifestyle Chlamydia felis (contagious conjunctivitis) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Cats living in groups, catteries, show cats |

Adult California Spangled booster shots are given annually for feline herpesvirus and feline leukemia if your cat goes outdoors. For feline panleukopenia, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your cat's lifestyle.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy California Spangled

An annual veterinary check-up with weight monitoring, oral and dental examination, vaccination and parasite prevention is generally suitable. Depending on age and lifestyle, the veterinarian may adjust the frequency of check-ups.
