Health

# The British Shorthair's health

United Kingdom

The British Shorthair generally has robust health and good longevity, provided it benefits from regular veterinary follow-up, an appropriate diet and a lifestyle limiting overweight. Like other selected breeds, it nevertheless remains predisposed to certain hereditary conditions that justify the vigilance of both the breeder and the owner.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

Its longevity often falls within a high range for a purebred cat. A well-monitored individual, living in a secure environment and receiving a quality diet, can maintain a good quality of life for many years.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

The British Shorthair is considered a generally robust cat, with a solid build and a temperament not prone to excessive stress. This robustness does not rule out particular attention to the selection of breeding cats, weight control, and screening for diseases known in the breed.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Health monitoring should mainly focus on screening for cardiac and renal conditions known in the breed, as well as maintaining a stable weight. Careful observation of appetite, activity, breathing and coat quality often makes it possible to detect an imbalance early.

- Feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: This heart condition causes a thickening of the heart muscle and can gradually impair the functioning of the heart, hence the importance of veterinary monitoring and screening in breeding cats.
- Polycystic kidney disease: This hereditary disease is characterized by the formation of cysts in the kidneys, which may progress to kidney failure over time.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

Thanks to its dense coat, the British Shorthair tolerates rather well cool environments. However, it above all appreciates a temperate, dry and comfortable habitat. In hot periods, it must be able to rest in an airy, calm place and sheltered from prolonged overheating.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

The British Shorthair can easily gain weight if it leads too sedentary a life or receives too rich a ration. A measured diet, daily play, and regular monitoring of its body shape are essential to preserve its mobility, joint comfort, and overall health.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Monitor weight and body shape throughout the year.
- Schedule regular veterinary check-ups and routine vaccinations.
- Ask for lineage screening tests before adoption.

Vaccination

## British Shorthair vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a British Shorthair need? Like all cats, British Shorthairs should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: Typhus (panleukopenia) and Coryza. Kittens receive their initial British Shorthair vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year, even if they live indoors. Depending on their lifestyle (outdoor access, living with other cats, shows, travel), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Feline leukemia (FeLV), Rabies and Chlamydiosis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Typhus (panleukopenia)Core Feline panleukopenia (cat parvovirus) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| CoryzaCore Feline herpesvirus and calicivirus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| Feline leukemia (FeLV)Depending on lifestyle Feline leukemia virus | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Outdoor cats, cats living in a group or in a cattery |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, cat shows and most boarding kennels |
| ChlamydiosisDepending on lifestyle Chlamydia felis (contagious conjunctivitis) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Cats living in groups, catteries, show cats |

Adult British Shorthair booster shots are given annually for feline herpesvirus and feline leukemia if your cat goes outdoors. For feline panleukopenia, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your cat's lifestyle.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy British Shorthair

It is advisable to favor breeding cats tested for polycystic kidney disease and monitored from a cardiac standpoint, notably with regard to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Then, regular veterinary check-ups, dental follow-up and weight monitoring help maintain a good overall condition.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.
