Feeding

# Feeding your American Bobtail well

United States

The American Bobtail needs a complete, balanced diet adapted to its size, age, neutering status and activity. Its tendency to lead a calm life requires particular attention to portions in order to prevent excess weight.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Kitten: Choose a complete growth food and divide the ration into several small meals suited to its development.
- Adult: Adjust portions to ideal weight, neutering and activity in order to preserve an athletic silhouette.
- Senior: Have the energy intake, digestibility and kidney or joint support regularly reassessed with the veterinarian.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

High-quality kibble, a complete wet diet or a mixed ration are suitable, provided they cover the needs in animal proteins, essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals. Wet food promotes water intake, while kibble must be precisely rationed.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

The daily amount depends on the energy density of the food, the ideal weight, the age and the activity level. The manufacturer's guidelines are a starting point to be adjusted with the veterinarian according to changes in weight and body condition.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 5 - 6 kg | 60 - 80 g | 2 - 3 |
| 7 - 9 kg | 80 - 105 g | 2 - 3 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any change of food must be gradual over about 7 to 10 days, gradually increasing the proportion of the new food in order to limit digestive disorders and refusal to eat.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Fresh, clean water, renewed every day, must remain available at all times. Several water points or a fountain can encourage consumption, especially if the diet is mostly dry.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats should remain occasional and represent a small part of the daily energy intake. Their quantity must be deducted from the ration, especially in a neutered cat, one that is not very active, or prone to being overweight.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh the daily ration rather than filling the bowl free-choice.
- Adjust quantities to body condition and not solely to the measured weight.
- Use puzzle feeder toys to slow down food intake.
- Monitor weight at least once a month.

### Never feed these foods

Chocolate, onion, garlic, leek, grapes and raisins, alcohol, caffeine, xylitol, cooked bones and human medicines are dangerous for the cat and can cause severe poisoning. Cow's milk is often poorly tolerated and never replaces water.
