Feeding

# Feeding your Abyssinian well

Ethiopia

The Abyssinian needs a complete, digestible diet that is sufficiently rich in animal proteins to support its activity. The quality of the ingredients, the balance of the rations and the adaptation to age are more important than the quantity served alone.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Kitten: A growth diet, more divided into smaller meals and more energy-dense, helps support development without excess.
- Adult: The ration must cover its activity level while preserving a lean, muscular silhouette.
- Senior: Digestibility, hydration, and monitoring of weight and kidney function become even more important with age.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

A premium diet for an active cat, in the form of high-quality kibble possibly supplemented with wet food, generally suits the Abyssin well. Recipes rich in animal proteins, moderate in carbohydrates and adapted to its age, activity level and body condition should be preferred.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

Daily quantities must be adjusted to weight, actual activity, neutering and the type of food provided. In this very active cat, the aim is to cover energy needs without encouraging excessive snacking or gradual weight gain.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 4 kg | 50 - 60 g | 2 |
| 5 kg | 60 - 70 g | 2 |
| 6 kg | 70 - 80 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any change in diet must be made gradually over several days in order to limit digestive upsets and encourage good acceptance. A slow transition is particularly useful for cats that are sensitive to variations in texture or smell.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

The Abyssinian must always have access to clean, fresh water. A water fountain or the combination of wet food and kibble can help support good hydration, an important point for the cat’s urinary and kidney comfort.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats can be useful to reinforce training and enrich the relationship, but they must remain occasional and integrated into the overall ration. It is better to choose simple, digestible and low-calorie rewards.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh portions rather than estimating them by eye.
- Split the food intake if the cat asks often.
- Introduce any new food gradually over several days.
- Combine wet food and fresh water to support hydration.

### Never feed these foods

Chocolate, onion, garlic, grapes, alcohol, caffeine, xylitol and cooked bones should be avoided because they can cause digestive, neurological, hematological or renal disorders that are sometimes serious in cats.
