The dogs are worked throughout the shooting season in beating, picking-up and double-gun work. Their preparation emphasises stamina in dense heather, close control in a line, reliable heelwork, patience before retrieves and steadiness around falling game. They also take part in walked-up shooting. During July, the kennel's dogs are used to locate and flush young grouse for moor counts, where restraint is especially important. Cragtop Gundogs occasionally breeds litters to maintain its own kennel and also has several stud dogs. Its breeding reflects the demands of regular field work.
